At Yanoon Biotech, we think that a truly excellent kiwifruit cultivar must meet the following three requirements:

Firstly, consumers should love it. This means that the fruit of a cultivar should look good and taste good. Good taste is for more important, as consumer’s preference of a particular kiwifruit is often because of its good taste. No consumer ever says that I love that kiwifruit so much because it looks so good.

Secondly, fruit dealers should love it. This means that the fruit of a cultivar should keep well during storage and transportation, not easy to become rot. Fruit that do not keep well will make fruit dealers scared to deal with.

Thirdly, growers should love it. This means that the cultivar should have good adaptability to environmental conditions, strong resistance to pests and diseases, be easy to grow and manage, and have high and stable yield. In the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River region of China, a major problem for kiwifruit growing is the high temperature and drought in summer, which often leads to heavy defoliation and fruit drop, and deterioration of fruit quality and storability. Therefore heat tolerance is an important requirement for kiwifruit growing in this region. In recent years, resistance to PSA has become a new requirement of a good kiwifruit cultivar due to the outbreak of the disease in many kiwifruit production areas all over the world.

A good kiwifruit cultivar should meet all these three requirements, and should not have any fatal shortcoming.

Based on the above considerations, Yanoon BioTech has set the following six major breeding objectives in the kiwifruit breeding program: fruit taste, fruit appearance, fruit storability, heat tolerance, disease resistance, and high yield.
